Updating SeekTech SR-20 Locator Software to v5.61 via HQ for Windows

Read this article to learn how to update the software on your SR-20 utility locating receiver to version v5.61 using HQ for Windows.

Note: This update is required for SeekTech SR-20 locators manufactured between May 2024 and December 2024 with serial numbers ranging from 213-40188 to 213-54288.

Materials Needed

To update your SeekTech SR-20 locator, you will need the following materials:

Installing HQ for Windows

If HQ for Windows is not already installed, follow these steps:

  1. Download HQ for Windows v2.1.483 at the following link: https://support.seesnake.com/hq-for-pcs/
  2. Click “Install HQ Software Version 2.1.483”
  3. Open your “Downloads” folder, and double click “seesnakehq” to begin the installation

Note: Make sure you have administrative privileges on your computer to install the software.

Verifying HQ Software Version

Note: You must be connected to Wi-Fi to check for and download updates.

After installing HQ for Windows, ensure you have the correct version before updating your locator:

  1. Open HQ for Windows
  2. Click on “Updates,” and then “Update HQ Software” in the top left corner of the toolbar
  3. Check the status of your software:
    • If you see “There is no software currently available, your software is up to date”, you are on the latest version and ready to proceed.
    • If you see “HQ Update 2.1.483 is ready. Click to update” in the “Notifications” section in the bottom left of your screen, click that notification and follow the instructions to update to the latest version of HQ.

Updating Your SR-20 Locator

Once you have verified that you are running the latest version of HQ for Windows, follow these steps to update your SR-20 locator:

  1. Connect the SR-20 locator to your computer using the USB-A to USB-B cable
  2. Power on the SR-20 locator
  3. In HQ, click “Updates” and then “Update Software for Device”
  4. In the window that pops up, select “SeekTech Locating Receiver” under “Type.” Under “Model” select “SR-20”
  5. Follow the prompts in HQ to complete the update process
     

Warning: Do not disconnect your SR-20 locator or turn off your computer during the update process. Doing so may result in software corruption.

Verifying the Update

After the update process is complete, follow these steps to verify that your SR-20 locator has been successfully updated:

  1. Turn off your SR-20 locator and then turn it back on
  2. Press the Menu key  to open the main menu
  3. Navigate to the Information icon using the arrow keys 
  4. Press the select key  to view the device information
  5. Verify that the software version is now v5.61

Note: If the software version does not show v5.61, try the update process again. If issues persist, contact customer support.

Troubleshooting

If you encounter issues during the update process, try the following solutions:

Device Not Detected

  • Ensure the USB cable is securely connected to both the SR-20 locator and your computer
  • Try using a different USB port on your computer
  • Make sure the SR-20 locator is on
  • Restart your computer and try again

Update Fails to Complete

  • Check your internet connection
  • Ensure your computer does not go to sleep during the update process
  • Close any other programs that might be using significant system resources
  • Try reinstalling HQ for Windows
